Truncated Icosahedron

Before I committed hundreds of man hours and over 1000 pounds of steel to the Dome project I wanted to make sure my math was accurate. Numbers can be calculated all day but nothing compares to a solid tangible object in front of you.

I bought a mat board cutter for $60 and with it I cut over one hundred 1/2” strips of mat board. Once I had my strips cut I used a template labeled for each strut member (A-E) and mark the strips to be cut. The best way I’ve found for cutting the strips is with Craftsman “Handi-Cutters”.

After I had cut 360 pieces, I taped them together into small triangles with masking tape on the outside. This way when the individual triangles are glued together the tape will be hidden.

With a small foam brush I applied Elmer’s white glue to one side of two triangles then clamp them with binder paper clips.

Twelve of these smaller triangles get glued together to form one face triangle of an Icosahedron.

After eight full triangles and four half triangles are made they get glued together to make the dome. In a few of the pictures you can see “Tank Girl” put in to show scale. Later I decided that I didn’t like the two different colors so the model was painted primer white.

I had always intended to complete the model making a full sphere. Unfortunately the model was destroyed by an unattended two year old. The remaining pieces were brought to Burning Man and placed on a burn platform near Center Camp.
