I have a lot of friends that work at BackSpace internet Café. In the past their tip jar had been stolen once every 2-3 months. During the month of April 2006 they had their tip jar stolen 3 times.
I decided to make a new theft proof Tip Jar. After a lot of sketching and brainstorming a surplus military ammo can seemed like a good place to start. In a tip jar the money needs to be visible. If people see that everyone has put in a dollar they will follow right along and put their money in as well. To make the money visible I installed two Acrylic glass windows. To help increase the visible money on the inside I glued in three mirrors. With the mirrors a single dollar bill looks like four dollars. BackSpace is a Coffee shop and an Internet café. I wanted to lessen the military look and give it a more futuristic look. I also felt like there should be something inside the ammo can to help draw attention to it. It seemed logical to put ammo in an ammo can. I got some surplus 20mm shells and on the lathe turned acrylic bullets for the shells. Inside each of the bullets I glued 3 LEDs. The handle was replaced with a bar of aluminum and a stainless steel handle. A half inch acrylic plate was glued to the bottom and illuminated with 13 blue and green LEDs. Finished 5/13/2006 |
