Tent

Friends of mine wanted a tent frame that they could take to Burning Man and also use for SCA camping events. They bought the materials and we traded for the labor. They are sewing the cover themselves.

The poles are made of 1-1/4inch galvanized chain link fence poles. A 20ton hydraulic press was used to press the ends flat.

A special press plate was made so that the ends of the poles would have a rounded profile, this adds strength, preventing bending and tearing that could occur if the pipe was flattened on a straight line. The poles get holes drilled through the ends to connect to the joints. The five roof poles have the ends bent at angles to form the roof pitch.

The joints are made of one foot sections of steel pipe. The pipe is capped on one end and a 1/2" nut is welded on the underside of the cap. This is where the poles get bolted to the joint tubes.

The poles that go to the ground slide into the pipe and are held in place with 3/4inch struts. These struts add stability to the structure.

A welded piece of chain makes the tie down points. Also integrated into the joints are a series of movable hooks that clothing or lights can be hung on.

The project was finished in two weekends and material cost was around $200.
