I got a lot of comments on the way I framed my doors. I wanted to create a large inviting opening for the dome. I also wanted two doors, one pointing out towards the street and one in the back leading to our tents. To create the doors, several struts needed to be removed. Removing struts takes triangles out of the dome; the triangles are what give the dome its strength. To counter the missing triangle I created new triangles with custom length struts.
A whole hexagon had to be removed, except for the three upper struts and two panels. Along the edges, three long obtuse triangles were made. These triangles strengthened the sides of the hexagons, and still allowed more than enough room for people to pass through.
More support was still needed in the center. I added a leg that extended from the center to the ground. It also came inside the dome about 18", creating another triangle; this one along a different plane. With this in place the doors were very sturdy.
