BackSpace Sign

This was a sign that was commissioned back in late November. I started work on it before going to Tahoe, which is where I broke my Leg.

After three months of recovery I was finally able to to finish the sign.

The sign was commissioned by the owners of BackSpace internet Café on NW 5th and Couch, Portland Oregon.

It was designed to replace the old plywood sign that they had. It needed to look like an A-frame sign due to city permits.

The "hydraulic ram" is actually the old shock off of a friends Fiero. He sadly had to part with the project car but I think he’ll be happy to have a small part live on.

The sign has 42 high power LEDs in the custom formed acrylic logo.

Also inside the logo are 12 small mirrors donated by my girlfriend. The mirrors are hanging by Kevlar thread, they rotate slowly and randomly by airflow from a CPU cooling fan.

The main body is designed to hold flyers for upcoming shows and is lit by a Volkswagen Bug head light.

All power to the sign is 12V DC to meet fire marshal’s regulations.

Total weight is about 250 lbs.
All metal was previously scrap.
All welding was with a gas setup.
I spent about 150-200 hours working on the sign.

I’m hoping that the location will bring in some new business for both Myself and BackSpace.
